First full day in Stuttgart and I slept until noon. Jet lag is tough! The weather was gorgeous and 62 degrees. I grabbed my jacket and walked across town to meet a new friend originally from Montana who wants me to water her plants this summer and bring in her mail. Karen lives in a modern apartment filled with Japanese furniture and knickknacks that she collected while teaching in Japan. She also has Netflix! She offered to pay me, but I told her Netflix would be my payment! I walked around beautiful downtown Stuttgart passing several stumbling stones embedded in the sidewalks etched with the names of Jewish people deported during WWII. Stuttgart is now full of people from all nationalities…not anything like the Aryan nation Hitler envisioned. I ate an absolutely delicious dinner of spicy sour duck soup and appetizers at a Chinese restaurant along with a Pilsner beer. Not trying to be overly dramatic, but a sense of euphoria came over me while drinking the cold beer, feeling the breeze, listening to Christopher Cross’ “Sailing” and looking out on the wide sidewalk filled with Sunday browsers. Just doesn’t get any better than this!
